Environment

This page has some comments & observations on the somewhat tenuous state of our planet. Volunteer news, birding, local, state, national and International issues of importance (in my humble opinion). Our governments are notoriously negligent when it comes to protection of our natural heritage. Change can be initiated by the people taking a stand to defend the environment. Ignore it and it will go away...

LOCK THE GATE ALLIANCE

The  LOCK THE GATE ALLIANCE is a national alliance of over 120 community, industry and environmental groups and over 1000 supporters concerned with the devastating impact that certain inadequately assessed and inadequately-regulated fossil fuel extraction industries are having on our short and long term physical, social, environmental and economic wellbeing.

Coal Seam Gas and open-cut coal mining are real threats to Australia's food and water security and environmental values. Join the Lock the Gate Alliance and do your bit for democracy and our future!!!

WENTWORTH GROUP OF CONCERNED SCIENTISTS

The Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists is an independent group comprising leading Australian scientists, economists and business people with conservation interests. The Wentworth Group has three core objectives:

1.Driving innovation in the management of Australia’s land, water and marine resources;
2.Engage business, community and political leaders in a dialogue to find and implement solutions to the challenge of environmental stewardship facing the future of Australian society;
3.Building capacity by mentoring and supporting young scientists, lawyers and economists to develop their skills and understanding of public policy.

ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS:

Our local environmental group do some very good work. Eco Network has proactive policies to help conserve both marine and terrestrial environments and to address the excesses of development and government:

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES:
Habitat Destruction:Habitat destruction is arguably THE biggest environmental issue in the World today (aside from exploding human population growth - which is causing the habitat destruction). Areas of untouched wilderness are under increasing pressure. Over the past decade or so many groups have sprung up in Australia dedicated to saving habitat from clearing and other forms of destruction. If you don't have the habitat the wildlife has nowhere to live, biodiversity declines, gene pools collapse, etc, etc. Australia has the worst record in the World for mammalian species extinction! These Non-Government Organisations have strong ties with scientific organisations and Universities, they need help with donations and volunteers. Three groups I recommend are:
Bush Heritage Australia
Australian Wildlife Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy

Feral animals & plants:
The Invasive Species Council is a national conservation group campaigning for stronger laws, policies and programs to keep Australian biodiversity safe from weeds, feral animals, and other invaders. Their latest report: Stopping NSW Creeping Peril, A community call for action on weeds is available on the web:

View the recently released report into the state of our northern wildlife. It makes for extremely sobering reading:

Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease:
Help our embattled Tasmanian Devil by making a donation to assist research in Facial Tumour Disease which has already wiped 90% of our unique little Devils from the face of the Earth:

Friendly little fellers, they'd make great pets...
and an added bonus: they hate cats!
